Perhaps due to the closure of most movie theaters from the pandemic, Netflix held both the most nominations for motion picture distributor and television distributor this year (42 total). This includes Mank, the film with the most film nominations and The Crown, the television show with the most nominations. Mank, starring Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried, is a bibliographical drama film following screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz in the 1930’s. The Crown portrays Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times. The Queen’s Gambit, Schitt’s Creek, The Prom, Over the Moon, and The Life Ahead were some of the other nominated shows distributed by Netflix.
An opinion article published by NBC criticized the Golden Globes for corruption. It mentioned the nomination for Netflix’s Emily in Paris, stating it was a film described as “fluff by pretty much everyone who watched it.” They also questioned why Da 5 Bloods and I May Destroy You, two films with predominantly black casts, received no nominations.
Variety mentioned that Amazon (known for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Small Axe) and Hulu (known for Normal People and Palm Springs) received 10 nominations each.
CNN reported actor Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in 2020 from colon cancer, received a posthumous nomination for his role in the Netflix film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a musical following a blues singer in the 1920’s.
One controversial nomination was James Corden for best performance by an actor in musical or comedy. Corden, a straight man, plays a gay theater actor. According to Insider, Corden received heavy backlash from critics and fans who described his performance as a “stereotypical and offensive portrayal of a gay character in the film.”
This will be the fourth time that Amy Peohler and Tina Fey will host the Golden Globes, though this time, they will be on opposite sides of the country.
