On the second floor of Skyline High School, students can find a room full of magic, monsters, and mysteries. In the English room 2410 there is a Magic: The Gathering Club (MTGC) run by Mr. Mounteer, a 9th and 10th grade teacher who loves fiction and adventure. Mounteer couldn’t do all this work by himself, however. A Junior at Skyline High School named Liam Greene helps to run the club currently.
In 1993, Richard Garfield, a college student, made the MTGC when he was studying computational mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. He later graduated with a master’s degree in computational mathematics in 1995. Soon after, he refined and completed MTGC on the West Coast with others who actively played the game.
The MTGC has been around at Skyline High School for four years, but the game has been around for over thirty years. Other schools have had MTGC since the game started. Skyline High School was a little late to the party but has made up for its missed time. MTGC was started four years ago by Mounteer and student Elijah Hansen, who was the president but who soon graduated after starting the club.
These students have been playing the game for most of their lives, with Liam Greene saying, “I’ve been playing for eight years.” They started the club when they were in their Sophomore year. Soon after Hansen graduated, Greene was elected by his fellow wizards to lead the group.
Not only is MTGC a place where students get to play a game, but it’s also a place to make friends. President Greene said, “I’ve made a lot of good friends in MTGC that I can see being friends with for the rest of my life.”
In MTGC, there’s a diverse batch of students ranging from athletes to honors students and many more. Each of these students have a different deck of cards which they collect throughout the years they have played the game. In addition to having a unique deck of cards, each student has a specific way they play the game, allowing for diverse and interesting game play.
