The role of a Senior Student Body Officer (SBO) comes with its challenges, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding experience. These leaders play a key role in shaping the school’s culture, guiding and inspiring their peers, while fostering a sense of community and school spirit. For this year’s Senior SBO team, their leadership has influenced not just the school environment but also their personal growth.
For many SBOs, the decision to run for office is driven by a desire to make a difference. “It has encouraged me to support the student body and show up to a variety of school events, including dances and sports games,” says Khanhlinh Nguyen, Historian. Her involvement has helped her connect with different student groups and make them feel included.
Roxie Goodwin,Vice President, motivated by a desire to be a positive influence, shares, “I wanted to become an SBO to represent how people should act and make sure they always have someone to talk to.” Her leadership is rooted in being a reliable resource for others and showing her peers they’re never alone.
One of the greatest rewards of being an SBO is the chance to meet new people. “It has helped me meet new people outside of my friend group,” says Kate Hinckley, Publicity Officer. These connections extend not only to students but also to teachers and administrators, enriching the entire high school experience.
Despite the rewards, the position requires hard work and time commitment. “The hardest part is probably the amount of time spent at school,” says Nora Winterton, Publicity Officer. “But you get a built-in friend group and you’re never doing anything alone.” The bonds formed through the shared experience of leadership make even the long hours feel worthwhile.
Ollie Bridge, Assembly Chair, encourages future SBOs to “go all in for it and don’t give up even if you don’t get elected the first time.” His advice reflects the importance of perseverance and dedication, which lead to personal growth and lasting memories.
Senior SBOs play a crucial role in shaping Skyline’s culture. Through their leadership, they create a positive, welcoming environment that will continue to thrive long after graduation. Being an SBO is a chance to make a lasting impact, build meaningful relationships, and leave a legacy of leadership.
