Monster Mash is an annual Halloween dance. It is put on by the school and is advertised on the morning announcements with episodes called “Nightmare on Eagle Street,” introducing the dance and promoting school spirit. The episodes continued into two other announcements, all of them ending in a cliffhanger, except for the last episode. The last episode ended with a victory by Sophomore Skyline students and the “villain” stating, “That was not the right way to show Eagle spirit; I should’ve gone to Monster Mash,” ending the series of “Nightmare on Eagle Street.”
Many Freshmen expressed that their main excitement about the Monster Mash dance was the fact that it would be their very first high school dance. One Freshman, in particular, shared, “It was my first dance, so the most exciting part was going in general.” This shared the anticipation and curiosity many Freshman students felt. For these Freshmen, the dance wasn’t just about the music and costumes, it was a chance to experience their first high school dance and make precious memories with their classmates.
The actual dance took place on Saturday, October 26. There was music and costumes, but no food or entertainment other than music. Ruby Lopez, a student who attended the dance, expressed her thoughts on the event. She said, “I would like to see food and games next time and not just water.” It’s clear that, while the event had an exciting atmosphere, some students expected more of a variety in terms of refreshments and games to create a more entertaining experience.
Similarly, a Freshman shared their opinion about the event’s playlist, stating, “I wish they would’ve had refreshments and more of a Halloween themed music playlist.” This quote shows the desire for a more festive environment, with students who attended looking for a playlist that better exudes Halloween vibes rather than regular school dance music.
While Monster Mash provided music, some students found themselves disappointed by the lack of food, games, and a more festive environment. Ruby Lopez expressed her thoughts on the event, saying, “My favorite part of Monster Mash was leaving to go hang out with my friends.” This highlights that, for some the event failed to live up to expectations, and the social experience outside the dance itself was more enjoyable than the time spent at the party. Despite the atmosphere, some students felt let down by the event and opted to hang out elsewhere.
However, for others, the night was still fun, and students were able to connect and create memories with friends. Another Freshman shared their favorite part of Monster Mash when asked about it and said,“Hanging out with my friends,” showing that, despite the event’s lack of food, games, and festive music, some students still enjoyed the experience and made memories with their friends.
