As the end of the 2024–2025 year approaches, it signifies a time to look back on Skyline’s first year with a new building, a new principal, and new traditions. Niara Warner, a Sophomore RISE Ambassador, took the time to reflect on the changes ambassadors brought. Warner explained the process of making plans and arrangements for the school year: “It’s been challenging but fun. Lots of trial and error, lots of pushback, but we’ve been successful with certain things, so that’s good.”
Something that RISE Ambassadors were involved in that isn’t very well known was Freshmen Orientation, as well as their overall emphasis on working with Freshmen to make sure they know what to expect and how to contribute at Skyline. “We did actually help with the Super Reunion last year, and a lot of people didn’t know about that,” Warner added. She also explained the experience working with Freshmen: “When you look at them you think, ‘there is no way I was that annoying last year.’ It’s definitely hard to get them involved, but once they are, they’re really sweet and fun.”
Warner also feels she’s progressed as a young person and really grown through the program. She said, “I joined RISE because I’m an out-of-boundary kid, so I didn’t know anyone here. I tried to get involved as much as possible, and this ambassador program helped me get friends, it helped me know the school, [and it] helped me know the culture.” She explained the culture shock when coming here from her old middle school: “There was no push to be involved. School was more like a legal obligation over there.”
Warner’s message to any students considering applying to become a RISE ambassador is this: “Totally do it. It’s not just a free easy period; it is a lot of work. It’s great if you’re looking to push yourself out of your comfort zone.” Looking back, she feels they’ve made a good impact this year. She said, “I would say we’ve laid a good foundation for future work. It will evolve as the years go on.”
