With the school year finishing up soon, many celebrations are happening for Seniors so they can end their last year of high school on a high note. Over the month of May, many events, both formal and casual, are taking place for the purpose of handing out awards and having one last Class of 2025 get-together. Starting it off, the graduating class picked up their cap and gown for graduation on May 8 at 10 a.m.; then, the next day was the Senior Sunset.
The Senior Sunset is almost a second part to the Senior Sunrise that happened in August 2024, signifying the beginning and ending of the school year. On May 9, the students met on the football field to watch the sunset together as a class.
The next event for them is the Senior Dinner Dance, which happened May 16 at 7 p.m. It’s one of the last more formal events of the year and was held at This Is The Place Heritage Park.
Another one of the more organized events is the Senior Awards banquet that happened May 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Melinda Reay is one of the staff members that had planned this event. When asked why she likes putting it together, she said, “I love seeing kids be rewarded for things that they do naturally that they might not think is incredible, but we think is incredible.”
At the banquet they gave out two types of awards, specialty awards and non-specialty awards. Specialty awards are given out to students who are nominated by a teacher, and non-specialty awards are for things like a 4.0 grade point average and Sterling Scholars.
This year’s ceremony was a little different from previous years. Reay says, “We are having it here from now on, we’re making it free, and then we’ve reduced the amount of rewards to make it a shorter ceremony.”
Ending their high school careers can leave some Seniors feeling nostalgic of the past four years. Ella Crouch, a Senior at Skyline High School, says, “I’ll miss Skyline a lot.”
A lot of these school-organized activities help the Seniors reflect on their high school experience. It’s also a way for them to leave it all behind on a happy note. Crouch says, “I’ll be going to all of them that I can, saying goodbye.”
In August, the current Juniors of Skyline will be taking the place of the current Seniors. To make the most of Senior year, Crouch advises the upcoming Seniors to “try to go to a bunch of activities and all the sports events, all the games, everything you can, because if you don’t, you’ll regret it.”
