The new Porsche dealership in Millcreek is now sponsoring Skyline High School’s Football team.
There have been a lot of companies that have been turned down by the Millcreek City Council for the land next to Millcreek Commons. They thought it would be a good idea to have the dealership there, because it’s two stories and wouldn’t be in the way instead of the other companies that have tried to buy the lot which would be tall and in the way. The community didn’t like the idea of having the dealership there, so the dealership decided to sponsor Skyline to have people start to like the idea of it being there and show that they want to make a difference in the community.
“People are warming up to the dealership being a new dealership [that is] coming into the area, and Skyline sports supporting it is a good thing, because the community really respects Skyline [and their sport teams],” Skyline football player Barrett Glotzbach said.
The dealership had to make the Millcreek City Council change the zoning so they could build there, since they turned down a lot of companies.
“When the Porsche dealership came, they said, ‘Well, that makes a lot of sense. It’s not very tall, it’s only two stories, and […] there isn’t a lot of traffic involved,’ and so that’s why they decided to grant the zoning change and let the Porsche dealership be built,” Quinn said.
With the sponsorship, it impacts the football players’ game. They can see the logo on the scoreboard, which gives it a bigger impact because the football players want to win for the company so they will keep sponsoring the team.
“I think them being an icon for our score board and being in a view for every game and practice, […] it’s there, you notice it, [and] it’s just cool to look at,” Glotzbach said.
The sponsorship is overall having a great impact on the school and the team. It shows other schools that Skyline High School has a big name, and it tells the community that the school likes the idea of the dealership.
“I think just having the sponsorship has opened it for schools to realize we are able to go out, talk to big things, and have our football team be recognized,” Glotzbach said.
With the sponsorship, Skyline can try and branch out to different companies and try to get more sponsors. The football team said that the sponsorship has influenced the team and the school very well, which makes an impact on their playing.
“It’s impacted it very positively knowing that we have such a big name as a sponsor that cares about our school and cares about our football team. It just gives me excitement to see such recognition,” Glotzbach said.
Because of the sponsorship having such a big impact and being an icon for the scoreboard, it might be intimidating for some younger kids who will be on the team in later years. When asked if he had a message for the younger athletes about the impact of this big sponsorship, Glotzbach said, “I think it may look like a big name, but they’re here because they care about us, […] and enjoy our school, and they want to help, so don’t worry too much about it.” He also said, “They’re here for positives and just to be a name with the school, so don’t be afraid of it.”
