On January 20, President Donald Trump was sworn into office, making him only the second president in United States history to serve two non-consecutive terms. This comes after a big election win in November of last year where Trump won over former Vice President Kamala Harris. The inauguration occurred at the Capitol building in Washington D.C. where Trump accompanied his family. Many celebrities and notable figures appeared at the event including outgoing President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, George Bush, and Bill Clinton.
One of the biggest headlines at the inauguration were the executive orders that he signed; Trump signed a record total of 26 executive orders, which was the most signed on the first day by any president in U.S. history. One of the most notable orders he signed was Executive Order 14151, which is intended to target the discontinuation of DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) programs in government workplaces and to report whoever was working on them. This comes as a big shock to many, as DEI programs have been around since the Civil Rights Movement of 1964. Another notable order President Trump signed was Order 14182, or “Enforcing the Hyde Amendment”, which stops federal taxpayer dollars from funding elective abortions. This also prohibits Medicaid, a public insurance program, from covering abortions. An anonymous Skyline High student said, “I think that the order was a horrible idea; there are over 8 billion people on this planet, so we can’t have it overpopulate more than it already is, and if birth control is given out for free then we can prevent overpopulation.” The student also expressed his general feelings about Trump being back in office, saying, “I don’t feel great at all about Trump being elected again, because he’s not only a convicted felon but has many more accusations against him. Also, when he was President the first time, a lot of people wanted him impeached.” There seems to be a lot of mixed reactions about this around Skyline High, as when another anonymous student was asked about the abortion order, he said, “I agree with it. Killing someone is against the law. Why should we give people who can’t afford it the ability to kill someone for free?” He was also asked about the amount of orders Trump signed on the first day and if he thought it was too high or low, “I think that it was the right amount, The Biden Administration did not do a good job running this country, and things needed to be fixed fast.”
