On August 29, seven months after President Donald Trump was officially inaugurated into office, he officially cancelled Secret Service protection for former Vice President and Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris.
This comes after her six month protection window since leaving office ended on July 21 but was extended by one extra year due to a now public order by former President Joe Biden. That order has since been cancelled by President Trump in a letter he wrote to CNN titled “Memorandum for The Secretary of Homeland Security.” The order came directly from the White House and took effect on September 1.
One day later, the news broke that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced that they will be providing protection to their former attorney general. This comes from a meeting between current Governor of California Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on how they were going to handle the situation. Mayor Bass said, “This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearance and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.” It has not been disclosed yet the terms of protection or how long it will last.
An anonymous Skyline student has shared their thoughts on the situation. “I don’t think Trump was right in any circumstance to take away service at all because that could easily put her life in danger,” the student says. “I think the highway patrol deciding to help out because someone should help her.”
Another Skyline student gives their opinion on CHP helping out: “I also think it’s good that highway patrol is stepping in because it shows that local law really cares.” They also gave a comment on if it was right or wrong to take away service, saying, “I think if there were credible threats then it was wrong to take it, but if not then I think it was okay because of the six month rule for Vice Presidents. I do think that major and high profile candidates do deserve protection though, especially with the growing violence in the world.”
