School is in session, meaning Skyline’s fall sports are officially in action. During the fall season, Skyline has a lot of sports going on.
Football is the sport at Skyline and Skyline Varsity Men’s Football represents the school every Friday night. Under the new head coach, Marcus Mailei, the Eagles won their first game at home against Summit Academy 33–16, their first win since September 23, 2022. Varsity kicked off its season on August 16 and will end on October 18.
A team that is often overshadowed by varsity is Skyline Men’s Freshman Football. The freshman team is very good and is 3–0 as of September 19. The starting freshman quarterback, Isaac Richards, plays three different positions on the team: quarterback, linebacker, and running back. In regards to how he handles the workload that comes with these positions, he said, “After playing football for a long time, something I’ve learned to do is to just step back and take a deep breath because it’s not always as much as it seems.” Part of how Richards steps back is by listening to music. He said, “I like to listen to music that gets me hyped up or calming music, like Bob Marley.”
Next, Skyline Women’s Volleyball started off on August 22 and plays their final game on October 30. The varsity squad has played 14 games total with a record of 12–2. The girls started with a staggering 11-game win streak to start the season and began with a 3–0 win over Copper Hills. They then proceeded to shut out 10 of the 11 teams they beat during their streak. Volleyball is completely free to get into (home and away), so it’s easy for students to attend the games and support the team.
Skyline Men’s Golf has also started, and the team had won five state championships in a row, up until last year. However, they intend to take back the victory. This year, Skyline Golf has not finished below second place in any tournament they have played since August 13. Skyline Golf has gotten first in three tournaments this year, winning at Stansbury Park, Rose Park, and the Region 6 Tournament at Old Mill. With the success they have had this year, Cade Robertson said, “We have guys that are experienced—guys who have been on the team and have won state championships. Last year we didn’t win, so that experience of winning and going through some difficulties has brought us back to focusing on winning another one.”
When asked if there was anything he told his guys to do to prepare the night before a tournament, Robertson said, “We focus on having them focus on their routine; getting enough to eat and getting enough to sleep, but also the biggest thing in preparation is practice and experience. The more times you experience something the better you’re able to handle it.” I asked him what he saw for the future of Skyline Golf, he was very optimistic. “We’re on an upward trajectory. A lot of people said after we won 5 in a row that that was it; I don’t think so. Our school is becoming the premier golf school for boys and girls in the Salt Lake Valley.”
Finally, Skyline Men’s and Women’s Cross Country started on August 23, with the season ending October 30. The boys had their first meet at the Payson Night Hunt where Skyline’s own Ezra Heckmann and Lorenzo Brandt finished both second and third, respectively. The girls also had their first meet at the Payson Night Hunt where Hallee Sullivan, Sophie Sullivan, and Grace Callister finished first, second, and third.
