Skyline Men’s Basketball did much better than they expected at the game that determines who goes to State, dealing with injuries and more. The team made it to the regional playoffs and suffered a heart-crushing loss to Springville 40–71. The winner of that game made it to State. Skyline beat West in the first round 67–44.
“We got hit with some injuries. We got hit with some players leaving early; Carson Kafusi graduates early to go to the University of Utah, and Trent Wells moves to Australia. Beau Bierman tore his achilles, so we lost potentially three starters in the off-season. For us to compete the way we did is stellar,” said Marcus Frazier, the men’s basketball coach. Frazier, overjoyed about how the team did, also mentioned how the program has been held to a high standard, and he feels the team met it.
Shane Mulvey, a Junior and a guard on the team, said that they made it farther than anticipated. A playoff but first-round exit and only 8 wins was what many members of the team were thinking was probable coming into the season, but after winning 13 games, Mulvey was more than pleased with the team’s performance.
“Came up a little short, but we learned, and we are excited for next season,” Mulvey remarked.
Cameron Wilson, a Senior and a center for the team, added, “We made it to Regionals, which is always your goal at the start of the season.”
Even though the team suffered many losses, Wilson said, “Basketball is a team sport, and trying to be the best as a team and as a whole unit is important, and at the end of the day, that is what is going to get you to where you want to be.”
The team had to regroup and come forward as a unit to make it through the season. Frazier said that the team did a great job and that they stepped up to make the season what it was. He explained, “We didn’t talk about losing Wells or losing Kafusi; we didn’t talk about that at all. The team never let that be an excuse. Players like Wilson and David Rasmussen, those guys stepped up and were just awesome. The Seniors were great for motivation. Considering what we lost, we definitely overachieved. The players weren’t going to let us have a losing record or be bad.”
