On Monday September 13, 2021, the highly anticipated annual Met Gala took place. The event was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, which this year had an American theme. Stars showed up dressed to impress, while some aimed to make a statement. After the misfortune of the event being cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19, and then being postponed this year for the same, fans and critics alike sat on the edge of their seats awaiting the photos to air. A few weeks previous, a seemingly real, but exposed to be false seating chart was spread on Twitter and Tik Tok. This caused plenty of hype and suspicion around the event which made even more people turn their attention. Pictures began to come out the night of the event as it was taking place.

Some of the looks met the standard, some exceeded it, while others gave next to nothing. Some of the looks deserve some further investigation. Including Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Debbie Harry, Emma Chamberlain, and Lil Nas X.

Kim Kardashian shocked everyone in a full coverage, black bodysuit, designed by Balenciaga. The look was previewed the day before on Kardashian’s Instagram, which made the outfit less exciting the day of. Demna Gvasalia is the designer from Balenciaga in charge of the look. Her face was completely covered with a ponytail flowing down past her feet out of the back. Many theories fluttered about the media trying to figure out the message behind her outfit. But the most accurate is showing how much of an American beauty standard herself and her fellow Kardashians have become. Skims founder, Kim Kardashian didn’t show anything other than the outline of her figure, yet by her iconic curves and persona, the world knew it was her.

Secondly, Kendall Jenner, while she looked undeniably stunning, her look just did not hit the nail on the head. In fact, the nail was so far off the head it seems comical. Jenner’s look was

created by a friend of hers from Givenchy. The inspiration for it came from Audrey Hepburn’s, My Fair Lady. Now remembering the theme for this year’s Met was America, Audrey Hepburn is an extremely iconic figure, however is from Belgium, and the movie which the look resembled is set in London. In past years, Jenner has exceeded expectations for this occasion, but this year, fans were very disappointed.

Debbie Harry, the lead singer of the band Blondie came dressed exceptionally well. The look was extremely tacky, but as is America. With a denim jacket on top, with a cupcake style american flag skirt. She was styled by Zac Posen.

Emma Chamberlain, twenty year old Youtuber and Influencer, attended for her very first time this year. Even with as much backlash as the event got for hosting influencers, none seemed to circle around Chamberlain. Dressed in Louis Vuitton, she gave one of the best looks of the night in a two piece fully gold look. She completed the look with slick hair curled up at the bottom, a classy American hair-do.

Lil Nas X came to his first Met Gala, aimed to be the star of the show. He entered in a large cape, seemingly modelling past royalty. A few steps onto the carpet and that was removed to show a gold, full suit of armor, paired with black boots. Moments later, that was discarded and sported a black and gold long sleeve bodysuit. Lil Nas X had each look designed by Donatella Versace. Although the theatrics of his look surely impressed, the final look was just unimaginative. However, he definitely knocked it out of the park, especially for his first appearance.
