New Vice Principals Soaring into Skyline

Skyline High School students have two new assistant principals joining them for the 2023-2024 school year. Ben Anderson and Heather Sonne have come to Skyline High School determined to help the Skyline community. The two assistant principals want to positively impact the school and its students with their experience and insight to help Skyline continue to RISE.

Sonne has 29 years of experience with  Granite School District as an assistant principal at Kearns, Hunter, Cottonwood, and now Skyline. In addition to being an assistant principal, Sonne also has experience coaching softball and basketball. She played basketball and volleyball in high school and even went on to play basketball in college. She coached at Cottonwood and said coming to Skyline is like coming home.

What she is most excited about is the passion throughout Skyline. Sonne says, “I enjoy that the majority of students here have a passion for learning. They like to go to class, they like to learn, they like to be pushed, they like to succeed.” Sonne is excited to get to know Skyline and the students she will interact with. The thing Sonne loves most about her job is seeing the students succeed in their activities and become good people.

Anderson began his career as a teacher at Wasatch Jr High and Butler Middle School. His first job as an assistant principal was at Cottonwood High School, which moved to Granger High School, the GTI, and currently Skyline. Anderson chose to go into education when he found out he got summers off, and he also enjoys working with kids in academic settings.

When asked what he is most excited about, Anderson says, “I am excited to be here because it is my community school where my kids will go…So far, there is a lot of positive energy here. The kids here are fantastic: they are wonderful, respectful, polite, and the teachers work so hard.” Anderson hopes to serve Skyline students and teachers in whatever needs they might have. He’s excited for the opportunity to recognize students and teachers for RISE.

Mitch Nerdin, the principal of Skyline High School, has nothing but positivity toward his new assistant principals. Nerdin explains, “They come with a ton of experience. So they hit the ground running. Mr. Anderson really values the concept of marketing and being positive in that marketing. Mrs. Sonne is super kind and very knowledgeable about academics and athletics, so that combination will really lend itself to helping Skyline. They are both very interested in being positive and in being kind and building relationships.”

Nerdin emphasized that the new assistant principals look to help the growth of the kids throughout Skyline as well as support the teachers in all that they need support. He added, “Skyline has the most experienced administrative staff in the entire school district.”
