Valentine’s Day is a widely celebrated holiday throughout the world, yet people often have very different outlooks on it. It’s full of pink hearts, red roses, and chocolate, but students’ views on the holiday could vary based on their perspectives and experiences. For some, it’s a day to celebrate with your friends or loved ones. For others, it may be a holiday that brings more pressure than love. Skyline students express their own opinions on Valentine’s Day and if it contains more stress or love.
Valentine’s Day can mean different things for different people. Francesca West, a Freshman at Skyline, expressed her love for Valentine’s Day and said, “I personally love Valentine’s Day, and it’s always been one of my favorite holidays. I know that some people say that it’s just a commercial holiday, but I think it gives a perfect opportunity to show how much you value and appreciate your friends, family, and partners.” She explains how her opinion may differ from other people, but she still believes in the positives of Valentine’s Day.
Depending on people’s perspective of the holiday, people may believe that Valentine’s Day is either over or under rated. Some students like Freshman Charlotte Knox feel like it depends on the situation. She said, “I don’t think the actual holiday is overrated or underrated, but it depends on your situation. You might love Valentine’s Day if you’re in a relationship or have plans, but if you’re lonely or don’t have anything to do, you may think it’s overrated.” This shows how some people may believe it depends on the person and plans.
People can see Valentine’s Day as a fun, silly holiday, while other people may feel some pressure from it. Freshman Bronson Sokol explains, “I think it can create pressure, because many people may want a valentine. But some people don’t get to have one some years, which can make them feel left out and makes them wanna get one, which can create pressure.” The feeling of pressure on Valentine’s Day can be common for many people.
Valentine’s Day may seem like it’s only for romance. In regards to if Valentine’s Day should be about romance or any kind of love, Knox says, “I think it should be about any kind of love, because if it’s more about romance, it can feel like it’s only for couples, excluding everyone else. It should be about showing your love to everyone you care about.” Showing your love and care to people seems to be a common theme with what some students believe Valentine’s Day should be about.
Many people’s views and opinions may change as they get older, such as their opinions on Valentine’s Day. West explains how she views this holiday now by saying, “As I grew older, I started using Valentine’s Day as a day to give attention to appreciate the people I love and to give people a gift that will make them happier, even if it just helps put a smile on their face for a minute of a long day.”
