Skyline High School’s beloved halls, built in 1962, have grown old and need to be upgraded into modern-day architecture. In November 2019, the school was set to be rebuilt and finished by 2025. Currently, Skyline has its new Athletic building and fields installed, and the main building is under construction.

The Nest has seen every student grow within its walls, and even a few teachers have practically been here all their lives. “I’m sad that the school that I’ve looked at almost every day of my life will be gone,” says Social Studies and Psychology teacher, Sydney Lott, who has been at Skyline since his attendance as a teenager. Although Lott will miss the old school, he expresses that he will not be missing the roof leaks in his room.

Many of the students, between grades 9th-11th are wondering if Skyline will be finished by their Senior year. According to Skyline’s principal, Mitchell Nerdin, “The next phase will be ready for school next year,” giving everyone a fresh start for the start of the school year of 2024-2025.

Skyline’s problem with asbestos seems to have always been around even when Lott was here. Lott explained that the ceiling roof tiles were made out of asbestos during his high school years, and 15 years ago, floor tiles were removed which also contained asbestos. This year, Skyline removed the floor glue that contained asbestos, leaving concrete floors behind. Although it was thought to be a big health issue, Principal Nerdin states, “the asbestos at Skyline was abated in such a way that it would not cause any health problems,” giving students a more relieving understanding of our health within the school.

Skyline High School has stood strong since teachers and parents attended, seeing this school being demolished is quite emotional for many different people. However, this will give younger generations a fresher start with better necessities that will make their time at Skyline much more enjoyable.
