Run Skyline Run!

A look into the Cross Country Season

October 5, 2017

Cross country takes endurance and dedication and it is no easy task as the Skyline Eagle are practicing morning and afternoon to conquer another great season.  The Eagles have always held a reputation as a team to watch out for.

This year it isn’t any different.  Coached by Tom Porter, both the womens and mens cross country team are training and competing for yet another region championship.

Porter, who has a long background in running, is looking for the men and women who will suitably lead his team this season as he has not yet picked the captains.

Womens runner Camille Winterton is looking to have another outstanding year as she has won multiple region championships in both Track and cross country and she looks to repeat this year.  To prepare the week of a meet,  Porter has his runners do hard vigorous runs and they don’t taper until region and state.

The team has not lost a lot of seniors from last year so many of the runners feel comfortable in having a strong team again this year.  Womens runner Abby Linford states that “Every year no matter who leaves or what new runners come in, It feels like a family by the end of the season.”

The team has a very tight bond as they are together most of the year working hard.  Looking forward to a region championship, the Eagles have a few tough competitors, Olympus is one of them.

Skyline has won 13 of the past 14 region championships and they look as good as ever this year.  Linford says “Olympus has a good team this year and they will be a good competitor, but if we do what Porter tells us then we can definitely win region.”

The Eagles will have a few places out of state that they will be traveling to this year such as Bob Firman in Boise, Idaho and either Foot Locker in California or Southwest regionals in Arizona which would be held in the postseason.

The team likes to travel out of state together because each time they do it they feel a tighter bond and it makes them an all-around better team.

With the combination of the long bus rides and rooming together, it lengthens the time they spend together and they definitely feel a tight bond with each other after a long road trip.

The runners are determined and prepared to go take another great season into their hands.  With Porter coaching a well-rounded team, there aren’t many teams that can stand in their way.  They would like to prove yet again that they are the king of the three miles.
