Skyline’s new counselor, Aryn Reeves, has inspired many students around her. Students are already benefiting from her organized approach and compassion for her work. Reeves worked towards becoming a school counselor when she was in high school, trying to figure out her own future.
Reeves said, “I knew I wanted to go to college but had no clue what to do. So I went to my school counselor. […] He gave me a bunch of research, and while none of it really fit me, I had a lot of fun doing the research.”
After earning a degree in education and spending time as a teacher, Reeves discovered she was most passionate about connecting with students one-on-one. Now at Skyline, she’s found her perfect place. She said, ”This is my favorite thing, or small groups of like 5 to 10 people.”
From helping Seniors stay on track for graduation to guiding students through college decisions, Reeves is already fitting into the school community. She says that, sometimes, it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.
“Right now, we’re meeting with Seniors to make sure they’re on track for graduation,” she said. Also helping students with their college plan, she added, “Having those conversations with my students, especially in the spring of Senior year, is really interesting and really fun.”
Her support extends beyond academics and school. Reeves also prioritizes students’ emotional well-being, making sure they know they’re never alone and have her to rely on.
“If you are having a hard time with a friend or at home or just struggling with life, the way you’re feeling about yourself, you can talk to your counselor. I tell my students that I am the emotional EMT. I am the first line of defense, and you can come talk to me. […] I can get you to the point […] if you need more help,” Reeves said.
When it comes to advice, Reeves keeps it simple; she believes that being intentional is the key to a great high school experience. “Do it deliberately,” she said. “If you put effort and passion into what you do, you’ll get that energy back tenfold.”
With her genuine care and steady guidance, Reeves’ welcoming presence in Skyline’s counseling office has made a strong and lasting impression. She is now someone students know they can turn to for help, advice, or even encouragement. “She actually cares for students instead of seeing it as a job,” said student Miranda Park.
