As spring is beginning and the days gradually get longer with daylight savings, students return to school facing the second semester. Some students see this semester bringing new classes, new goals, and new experiences. Other students feel the pressure, falling behind, being overwhelmed by work, and trying to raise their grades.
At the start of the second semester, schedules often change and students move into different classes. For some, this shift can feel more motivating after months in the same routine. \Jade Cantwell, a Freshman at Skyline, felt the second semester brought “For me, this quarter and semester had many new classes, which keeps things interesting in my schedule.” This is a positive outlook students may have on semester two.
However, for some students, the second semester is the complete opposite, bringing final projects, state testing, and the final stretch to the end of the school year. For many students, this will and can determine their final grades and much of this year’s progress. This makes the semester feel very important and also increases stress as students will balance schoolwork, activities, and sports. Phoebe Pohlman, a Skyline Freshman, agreed with this statement, stating, “The second semester is definitely the most challenging with managing all your classes and responsibilities… the pressure is definitely the worst in the second semester, especially with the first few cold months dragging by.” Pohlman provides that the second semester is the hardest, with the winter weather and feeling of overwhelming work.
While they both saw the pros and cons of the second semester, it can look different for every student. Along with different challenges, the second semester also brings exciting events. School dances, sports seasons, performances, and other activities give students something to look forward to while working through the rest of the school year. Pohlman stated she was excited for Dance spring concert and being able to see all her friends perform as something to enjoy in this last semester.
In the end, the second semester is a challenge, but it introduces many new opportunities. Whether students are trying to improve grades, keep being motivated, or just finish the year strong—the final months of school can be the most impactful part of the entire year. As students move forward, the second semester becomes a time to grow, adjust, and work in and out of school, whether they see the second semester with a positive or less positive perspective.
