Studying is a very important skill for students to have throughout all their years in school. When students build good study habits, it helps them tremendously with their school life and grades. Top students shared some of their tips and strategies for studying and explained why it is important.
Many students emphasized that studying methods are extremely important. Senior Johnathan Chen explained, “Studying is important, but what matters more is the study method. Rather than just reading out of a textbook, being able to actively recall [testing yourself] what you are learning is significantly more important.” He explains that studying is important, but it will not do much unless students do it the right way for the right goals, such as remembering what they learned.
Again, stressing the importance of studying, another student Ryan Li, a Senior said, “Studying is pretty important, as it helps you build foundations for learning and is a constant process in reviewing and refreshing content within your mind.” He added that this allows students to remember the things they learned later on.
Study habits are important to keep being consistent and helps a lot. Li stated, “Study habits are pretty important in the future, as they help you build discipline and help build a mindset where you’re dedicated and working hard is always very essential.” Building study habits helps in the future, and these skills can be applied in many other areas.
Chen gave advice for building good habits and explained, “The number one thing that building study habits will help with is time management, and specifically blocking your schedule. Being able to plan when to study and how to study efficiently will give you more free time, which is especially important in college!”
But while trying to improve on time management, many students find themselves struggling with procrastination. Senior Daniel Ha remarked, “Some of my best study tips are to study as soon as you get home. Pushing it further down the day is an easy trap which leads to procrastination.” Chen also gave his advice and said, “Something that has worked for me is to break each task into small steps. I always remembered that the hardest task is just to start.” While procrastination is still a hard thing to manage, these tips may help many students.
Along with tips, there are also resources available for students to help them. Ha said, “I rely on YouTube and other video-related resources which the teacher may have published.” Teachers often provide resources for students and their success and videos can help students understand topics easier. Chen also added, “It depends on the subject, but I like to watch review videos by creators I like and study with friends to test myself on important exams.” Besides teachers, friends can also help students a lot.
As students go through their school years, study tips and habits may help them significantly. These top students have learned throughout the years and shared their best advice to help. Finally, Chen gives his final advice and says, “Hopefully this will also prove true in college, but consistency was super helpful. Treating a specific time every day as ‘study/work time’ caused me to procrastinate less and have more time to do the things I want!”
