The Skyline Varsity Football team has won many games this season, ending up victorious for 6 out of the 9 games they have played so far. Their first win of the season was against Olympus High School—Skyline’s biggest rival— finishing the game with a lead of 14 to 9.
The Olympus vs. Skyline football game is a big deal among the students for both schools. Called the “Battle of the Rock,” many students come to this game to see who will get the football-shaped rock trophy.
Jillian Sagers, a cheerleader for Skyline, said that she liked cheering for the Olympus game because “it was a game that we weren’t expecting to win. And then we got in there, and it was a big win, like a history-making win.” The last time that Skyline won against Olympus in football was in 2017.
In past years, Skyline’s Football team hasn’t had as many wins as this season. In the 2024-2025 season, Skyline had one winning game against Summit Academy High School. Sagers thinks that the reason the team is winning more this season is because “we came in with a new attitude. They’ve been really working on learning new plays, getting focused, getting locked in. Also just working on team building and changing how things are done.”
Marcus Mailei, Skyline Football’s head coach, has also been optimistic about this season and regaining the rock from Olympus. In regards to Olympus winning next year, he said, “I don’t think that’ll happen, but they can try.”
This season they have also won against Juan Diego, Uintah, Jordan, Cottonwood, and East. These wins have been very clear, with the football team leading by at least 28 points and at most 45. Sagers said, “They’ve put in the work; they’ve worked hard.”
Mailei also thinks that the football team has been working hard all year long. During the summer, the football team has training. Years before Mailei was head coach, it was called the “Champions’ Course.” He changed it to “Eagles Conditioning,” saying, “I changed the name so that we could work towards becoming a champion and not just saying this is the Champions’ Course. I think the boys have earned that name back up the camp, so this upcoming summer, we’ll call it Champions’ Course.”
The Varsity team has had three losses this season. Their losses against Stansbury, West Field, and Highland were still close games, with their biggest loss being 17 points behind and their closest being 3 points behind.
With all their wins this season, the football team has made it into the playoffs. Mailei is confident in the players moving forward towards the quarter and semifinal games. He explained, “I think the boys mentally are on track to go to state and want it.”
The last time Skyline won the state championship was in 2005 against Brighton. Sagers is also hopeful about the outcome of playoffs and state championships. Sagers said, “Go Eags! You’re cooking up a storm this year […] I’m really happy for them and like how they’re doing.”
