Every winter at Skyline High School students grab their jackets and head to the rink to watch the Skyline Hockey team play. The games are loud, exciting and sometimes super intense. Some people love hockey because of the rivalries and big moments, while others just like being there with friends and cheering.
At Skyline, Hockey is a big deal, but what makes it so special? Dexter Ford, a Junior at Skyline, plays on the hockey team and had a lot to say about it. When asked what his favorite thing about playing high school hockey is, he said, “It gives you good insight on how to play against better players.” This shows that hockey isn’t just about winning but also about improving and challenging yourself.
When asked about Skyline’s biggest rivalry, Ford quickly said Park City Red. He explained, “They’ve won States like six years in a row, and everyone’s just been trying to beat them ever since. “That definitely makes those games more intense, because everyone wants to be that team that finally beats them.”
Ford also shared his highlight moment from this season, saying, “Scoring four goals in one game is a huge accomplishment and shows how much hard work he has put in.” His favorite National Hockey League (NHL) player is Marc Andre Fleury from the Minnesota Wild, even though he is retired now.
It’s not just the players who love Skyline Hockey. Ruby Bond, a Freshman, follows the team and enjoys going to the games. She said, “I really love going to their games, because you can tell that they’re putting work into what they do.” Bond likes how competitive the team is and how they show their hard work on the ice. Her favorite game she watched was when Skyline Varsity played Brighton. She said it was really competitive and went into overtime, which made the game even more exciting. Bond also said that watching the games makes her want to watch more hockey, even if she isn’t sure she wants to play. Her favorite NHL player is Alexander Ovechkin because of how talented and hardworking he is.
Overall, Skyline Hockey brings students together and creates exciting memories. Whether they’re playing on the ice or cheering in the stands, Skyline Hockey is something the school can be proud of. As Bond said, “I do follow the Skyline Hockey team. I really love going to their games because you can tell that they’re putting work into what they do, and I love watching them be so competitive and, like, really show off the work— like, their hard work. Into the games. It’s really interesting and fun.”
