Skyline High School’s Ballroom dance team performed “Momentum,” their final concert of the year, on April 23 and 24. This concert celebrated the many months of work the Ballroom dance team has spent training, presenting a variety of routines practiced over many rehearsals.
The program included a range of ballroom styles, with dances that varied in style, tempo, and formations. The concert had all their pieces align with the theme of “Momentum,” focusing on movement and progression. The ballroom team performed the waltz, rumba, chacha, quickstep, jive, and more, showing a lot of different forms art can be expressed in.
Elyse Black, a Sophomore student on the ballroom team, said, “I think our performance went very well, because we put the time and effort into it to make sure we put our best skills out on the stage.”
The concert also had elements that contributed to the routines, such as costumes and music that matched each. These components supported the performance and helped distinguish each different piece.
Audience members also admired the organization and variety of the show. Kaitlin Benson, who attended the performance, said that it was very coordinated. “The performance was very well prepared,” she said. “The dancers were all in sync, and they worked really hard to make the performance a success.”
The different styles made the performance feel more balanced. “I really loved how there were so many different types of dances. I never got bored because there was so many different things to pay attention to,” Benson said.
Another audience member, Victoria Lambertsen, said the concert was very well structured. “The transitions between the dances were very smooth and efficient…it all flowed together,” she said.
The final concert of the year was also special because it is the final ballroom performance with the whole group that the Seniors will be performing at Skyline, making it significant for some. Lambertsen said, “I have watched all the [ballroom] performances this year, and this one was really nice. The final one really hits hard.” The last show for the Seniors was really special. Black said, “This concert was different than the others, because of the Seniors on our team, it was their last time performing with us. This concert also included all the dances we have worked on all year.”
“Momentum” showed the dedication, preparation, and structure of Skyline High School’s ballroom dance team. The concert gave the opportunity for students to perform what they had learned and organized throughout the year and even some of the Senior students’ whole high school careers. Black concluded, “I would definitely recommend ballroom to new students, because it helps you make friends, meet new people, gain new skills, and explore new interests.”
