In September 2025, the title for the sequel of the Super Mario Bros. Movie was revealed to be an adaptation of the Nintendo Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. Despite the title, it also derives elements from other Super Mario games, from classics like Super Mario World to newer releases like Super Mario Odyssey, which shows how diverse the movie is going to be to Nintendo fans and gaming fans in general.
Some big takeaways from the movie trailers, according to Sophomore Jacob Murdock, was “the fact that they’re bringing in old school characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, like Wart and Mouser and Birdo, is pretty cool.” With the return of old school characters, they could have a chance to be better fleshed out, especially Wart who hasn’t appeared in a Super Mario game since the game Murdock mentioned (excluding remakes and remasters). Also, the inclusion of Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., was a big takeaway for Skyline Senior Easton Warner, as he said, “Bowser Jr.’s in the movie now, and it’s not just Bowser.”
Some Skyline students’ anticipation to see in the movie is because of Rosalina and her backstory. “I really hope they dove into Rosalina’s backstory,” Murdock said. “I feel like it’s one of the few things in Mario games that is more fleshed out.” Even though they weren’t announced in the movie, Warner is anticipating “Waluigi; I want to see Waluigi and Wario.” However, there are some unexpected characters in the trailers that Skyline students saw, such as the inclusion of Yoshi. Warner said, “[Yoshi] was very unexpected; I didn’t think they would put him in.” More unexpected characters in the trailers and teasers were Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series and Mario’s younger self. “The fact that Baby Mario shows up for a second there,” Murdock said. “I guess we’ll get into some shenanigans with time, so that’s cool.”
What could be explored in this movie is the father-son relationship between the Bowsers, and it may be portrayed as a redeeming quality for Bowser Jr., as his motive is to rescue his father. Warner remarked, “I think that Bowser Jr. will still like Bowser, and he’ll save him.” The same could be said about Bowser in the games, despite being depicted as an evil conqueror, Murdock said, “Bowser’s always been depicted as a really nice and kind father, so I think they’ll play that up, and it’ll be pretty funny.”
