The choir festival was on March 5 at Viewmont High School during school. Skyline’s Soprano/Alto (S/A) and Tenor/Bass (T/B) choirs performed together at the festival.
They performed three songs together, which were “Tongo,” “Shenandoah,” and
“When You Wish Upon a Star.” In addition, the songleaders and captains from the S/A and T/B choirs sang “All is Found.”
Freshman Miranda Park, who is part of the S/A Choir, said, “There are different categories of songs we have to sing. There’s one that’s in another language, which, this year for us, is ‘Tongo,’ which is a Polynesian song. And so, we just sing, and then there’s a few judges that watch us, and then we get scored, and they show us the score. Like, a few weeks later, and they sent it to us.”
According to some of the choir members, the festival went well and they enjoyed it. Though, some songs went better than others. “Tongo” seemed like a favorite song. according to Park and Freshman Aaron Jensen.
Jensen said, “I think we did very well. We did the best on ‘Tongo,’ because we were more in sync, and we knew it better than the rest.”
Park added, “For ‘Tongo,’ it’s kind of like when you say noises, like ‘ah’ and ‘ooh;’ it’s like those aren’t actual words, but they’re like kind of noises. It’s kind of, like, a call and response kind of song.”
When asked if the S/A and T/B choirs got to practice their songs together, Park said, “No, S/A chorus is a class, and then T/B chorus is a class, but we often sing songs together. But since we don’t have the same class period and we don’t have enough time to do it after school, we just kind of have to practice a little bit during tech rehearsals, [if we have one]. But for the festival, there [was no tech rehearsal] so we just practiced together at the high school for when we were warming up.”
One of their songs that the two choirs performed was “Shenandoah,” which Park said, “For ‘Shenandoah,’ we had two soloists. The soloist and the pianist are both in my choir.”
The S/A and T/B choirs did an amazing job, receiving only one minus overall from the judges.
Park said, “Choir festivals and Choir itself are really fun, and it’s a great experience to have.”
