Choir has become increasingly popular recently, with choir classes starting again and many students joining. Some students are joining choir for the first time, while others have sung before. Ruby Bond, a Freshman at Skyline High School, said this is her first time auditioning for choir. She explained that auditioning felt scary at first, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. Bond said, “It was a very good experience. They were so kind, and they helped me when I made mistakes, and it was just a really good experience.” This shows that choir teachers and students try to make new members feel welcome and comfortable.
Bond also shared what she likes most about being in choir. She said, “I love the community it brings, because it kind of brings together a bunch of people, and we all have a common interest.” Concerts also allow families and friends to come watch students perform, which makes the experience feel special and fun for everyone.
Some students in choir already had experience singing before coming to Skyline. Hannah Hijjawi, a Freshman and another student in choir, said she was in choir at her previous school and performed in cathedrals. She explained that choir at Skyline is a little different but still fun. Hijjawi said, “I really like making friends, and there’s a lot of really nice people on the choir team, and I love performing and growing and learning how to work together as a group.”
Students also said choir just does not really get in the way of school work. Hijjawi explained the concerts only happened once in a while and are usually only on one night. She said that, as long as students keep up with homework, choir concerts are manageable. Bond agreed and said that practicing songs is usually easy and does not take too much time.
Many choir students think the choir at Skyline High School gives students a chance to express themselves through music while making friends and learning teamwork skills. As more students keep joining, choir has become a more prominent part of school life. As Hijjawi explained, “Everyone works together to learn the pieces, and it’s not ever like a solo effort. Everyone works together, and it’s really nice.”
