On the first floor near the athletics wing, there is a class that encourages creativity and imagination.
Graphics is taught by long-time Skyline teacher Shawn Kennedy. Kennedy has been teaching since the 1990s, and his class is one of the greatest classes for the creative mind, because according to him, “Graphics is fun because we get to print t-shirts and make stickers and kids get to find products that they like and design and then make it and then take it home with them.”
In the class, students get to work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, which is crucial for the design of logos, art, etc. Once a student makes the design, they get to put it on mugs, shirts, stickers, etc., using techniques such as sublimation and screen printing.
One example of something made by a student is a mug with a green axolotl on it. On the back, it reads “You’re Axolot’ve Fun,” which shows how creative the class is. However, one downside of Graphics is that students may accidentally use copyrighted material on their stuff and sell them for profit. Luckily, Kennedy has rules when it comes to that possibility to prevent future lawsuits.
Overall, Graphics is a great class to learn how to design logos for merchandise. It’s also great to make friends and have a successful future. “I like to give students an opportunity to discover themselves,” Kennedy said. “To say, look at what you just learned, and then they are comfortable and confident in their abilities to make a t-shirt.”
