Teachers and students’ use of AI in schools K-12 is growing at a rapid pace. 86% of students and teachers in the past two years have been using AI (Npr.org). The question isn’t if AI should be used in classes, it’s if teachers should rely on AI to make assignments for them. Ultimately, teaching is a hands-on job; it should not be reliant upon AI. Ellie Brower, a Sophomore at Skyline High School, said that teachers should not be using AI. She stated, “If students can’t use AI, neither should teachers be allowed to use AI.” Brower also stated, “Teachers should not rely on AI to do their homework or tests for them. It brings out the fun in their job, and sometimes they don’t even look at the paper, so it could be wrong.”
Debra Wilson, a English teacher at Skyline High School, said that AI can be useful for some things. She has been a teacher for 16 years and said that AI has not changed her class that much. She said that teachers should be allowed to use AI, because she thinks it can be a helpful tool for learning purposes. Wilson said, “AI is becoming too much, and it is sad because one of Wilson’s students just this year was told to write a one sentence opinion piece and had to use AI to help her write it.” She expressed how her student did not even try to write their own opinion piece and typed it into AI and submitted that. Wilson said how sad it was that the student could not even state their opinion and had to have AI do it for them.
Both Brower and Wilson have strong points: most people think that teachers should not be allowed to use AI if students can not, and many think it’s unfair. Many others think that teachers should be allowed to use AI, because it can help teachers write more assignments and think that it can be of good use and nothing is wrong. AI is very useful in some ways, but in other ways, students use it to their advantage and make AI do their assignments and more.
Students need to realize that AI should be used for learning and furthering knowledge into something they’re trying to research.
